Argentina is located in South America’s Southern Cone. It is the eighth-largest country in the world, with 47 million people. Our country is a melting pot, with the vast majority of our citizens of European descent. Argentina is very rich in natural resources, including fresh water, minerals and hydrocarbons. Known as the “granary of the world,” our country is one of the world’s largest food producers, growing enough to feed more 400 million people a year. The literacy rate among Argentines is nearly 100%.

Argentina has more than 30 airports, such as the Ezeiza International Airport, the largest in Argentina, with flights arriving from all over the world; and Jorge Newbery Airport, the main hub for domestic flights, located in the capital city of Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is the birthplace of Pope Francisco (former Archbishop of Buenos Aires) and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, and will proudly host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Argentina stands out for its wide variety of tourist and cultural attractions, among them tango music and dance, the Atlantic beaches, the Parana Delta, the Patagonia, Iguazu Falls and the Perito Moreno Glacier. The quintessential Argentine meal is an asado (beef grilled on embers) followed by empanadas (pastries filled with meat and other ingredients), tamales, sweet corn and “locro”. Argentina is home to some of the best wines in the world, and its most widely-known infusion is mate, sipped hot through a metal straw. Argentina is a Spanish-speaking country, although a significant number of Argentines also speak English.

The National Academy of Medicine of Buenos Aires is a medical, public health and scientific research institution created in 1822. It also provides grants to medical or scientific researchers and publishes the results of its scientific research internationally.
